How to choose a cream for baby eczema

Eczema-prone baby skin has a weakened barrier — it loses water quickly and lets irritants in more easily. The job of a daily cream, called an emollient in UK clinical practice and sometimes sold as a barrier cream, is to replace the lipids that barrier is missing, and to keep doing it consistently.

Three things matter more than anything printed on the front of the pack. Ingredients: fragrance is the most common avoidable irritant, so fragrance-free is a sensible baseline, alongside paraben-free and paraffin-free. Texture: a cream needs to be rich enough to hold moisture in, but light enough that you will genuinely apply it two or three times a day — the cream you use consistently beats the richer one that stays in the cupboard. Suitability: if you are treating a newborn, check it is stated as safe from birth.

Can I use this alongside a prescribed steroid cream?

Yes — Ovée is safe to use alongside prescribed topical treatments. When using both, the usual guidance is to apply the prescribed steroid cream first, to the affected areas only, wait around 10–15 minutes, then apply your moisturiser over the whole area.

Some clinicians suggest the reverse order; the evidence does not strongly favour one over the other, and applying both consistently every day matters more than the order. Always follow your own prescriber's instructions.

Is it safe for newborns?

Yes — the Baby & Child Moisturising Cream and the Gentle Oat Wash are both safe from birth. If your baby's skin is broken or weeping, or you are unsure whether what you are seeing is eczema, speak to your GP or health visitor first.

What is the difference between a moisturiser, an emollient and a barrier cream?

In everyday use for eczema they describe much the same kind of product. "Emollient" is the term used in UK clinical practice for a moisturiser used to manage dry and eczema-prone skin. "Barrier cream" usually emphasises protecting skin from specific irritants such as dribble or nappy contact. What matters is the formulation and how consistently it is applied, not which word is on the label.

How often should I apply it?

For dry or eczema-prone skin, at least twice a day, and more often during a flare-up. Apply in a smooth downward motion in the direction of hair growth rather than rubbing it in.

Keep moisturising even once the skin looks settled — stopping removes the one thing actively helping the barrier stay repaired.

My baby has dry skin but not eczema — is this still suitable?

Yes. Dry, flaky or peeling skin is very common in the first few weeks of life and often settles on its own. A fragrance-free daily moisturiser is appropriate for everyday dryness as well as for eczema-prone skin.

Which size should I buy?
