Adult Eczema Skincare Routine, Explained by a Dermatologist
Tim Clayton
Eczema isn't only a childhood condition. Many adults either never grew out of the eczema they had as a child, or develop it for the first time later in life — often triggered by stress, hormonal changes, harsh skincare products, or simply drier skin as we age. The good news is that a consistent, simple routine can make a significant difference.
Here's the routine I recommend to adult patients with dry, sensitive or eczema-prone skin.
Step 1: A Gentle, Soap-Free Cleanse
Traditional soaps and many shower gels contain sulphates that strip the skin's natural oils, weakening the barrier further. Look for a soap-free, fragrance-free wash and avoid very hot water — warm water is kinder to compromised skin.
Step 2: Moisturise Within Minutes of Washing
The single biggest factor in managing adult eczema is consistent moisturising, applied while skin is still slightly damp — ideally within a few minutes of bathing or showering. This locks in moisture rather than letting the skin dry out first and trying to rehydrate it afterwards.
Step 3: Choose the Right Formula
Not all moisturisers are equal for eczema-prone skin. Look for:
Fragrance-free — fragrance is one of the most common triggers for adult skin reactions
High lipid content — ingredients like shea butter, sunflower oil and avocado oil that mirror the skin's own barrier lipids
No paraffin or parabens — these can irritate already-compromised skin
Dermatologically tested — formulated and tested with sensitive skin specifically in mind
Step 4: Reapply Through the Day
Unlike a standard moisturiser used once in the morning, eczema-prone skin benefits from reapplication whenever it feels tight or dry — particularly hands, which are washed frequently and often the first area to flare in adults.
Step 5: Protect Against Known Triggers
Common adult eczema triggers include:
Stress
Extreme temperatures and low humidity (central heating in winter, air conditioning in summer)
Wool and synthetic fabrics against the skin
Fragranced laundry detergent and fabric softener
Long, hot showers
You won't be able to eliminate every trigger, but being aware of your own pattern — many adults find flare-ups cluster around specific seasons or stressful periods — makes it easier to stay ahead of them with proactive moisturising rather than reacting after the fact.
Can You Use This Alongside Prescribed Treatment?
Yes. A good daily moisturiser is not a replacement for prescribed treatment during a flare-up, but a foundation that works alongside it. Apply any prescribed cream first, allow it to absorb, then moisturise as normal.
About Ovée Dermatologist Lipid Cream
I developed the Ovée Dermatologist Lipid Cream specifically for adults with dry, sensitive and eczema-prone skin, using a high concentration of natural lipids — shea butter, sunflower oil, avocado oil and jojoba oil — to repair the skin barrier rather than just sit on top of it. It's fragrance-free, paraffin-free and paraben-free, and safe to use alongside any prescribed treatment.
