Dermatologist-Developed vs Dermatologist-Tested: Why It Matters

Walk down any skincare aisle and you'll see "dermatologist-tested" on countless products. It sounds reassuring — and it's not meaningless — but it's a very different claim from "dermatologist-developed," and the difference matters more than most people realise when you're choosing a product for eczema-prone skin.

What "Dermatologist-Tested" Actually Means

In most cases, this means a product was formulated by a cosmetic chemist or brand team, then sent to a dermatologist (or a panel of them) to check for irritation or allergic reactions on a test group. It's a genuine safety check, but the dermatologist typically isn't involved in deciding what goes into the formula in the first place — only in confirming it doesn't cause obvious problems after the fact.

This is a real and useful step. But it means the product's core purpose, ingredient selection and formulation strategy were decided by marketing and cosmetic chemistry, not clinical experience with the skin condition it's meant to help.

What "Dermatologist-Developed" Means

This is a different process entirely. It means a dermatologist was involved from the start — deciding what the product needed to do clinically, which ingredients would achieve that, and in what concentrations, based on direct experience treating the condition in patients. Testing still happens, but it comes after a formula built around clinical need, not before.

Why This Distinction Matters for Eczema

Eczema-prone skin isn't just "sensitive" in a general sense — it has a specific, measurable barrier weakness that responds to particular types of ingredients (lipids similar to those in the skin's own barrier, for instance) and reacts badly to others (fragrance, certain preservatives, harsh surfactants) regardless of how gentle they're marketed as being.

A product designed primarily to be pleasant to use, then confirmed as non-irritating, can still miss the clinical need entirely — it might be safe without being genuinely effective for eczema-prone skin. A product built around that clinical need from the outset is far more likely to address the actual problem, not just avoid causing a new one.

Questions Worth Asking About Any "Dermatologist" Skincare Claim

  • Was a dermatologist involved in developing the formula, or only in testing the finished product?
  • Does the dermatologist involved have relevant clinical experience with the specific condition — for example, a paediatric dermatologist for baby eczema products, rather than a general practitioner or a dermatologist working in an unrelated area?
  • Is the claim specific (a named dermatologist, a described process) or vague ("dermatologist approved" with no further detail)?

About Ovée

Ovée was built the other way around from most skincare brands. I developed every product from scratch, based on 25+ years treating children and adults with eczema and sensitive skin as a Consultant Paediatric Dermatologist — deciding what the skin barrier needed first, then building the formula around that, rather than testing a pre-existing cosmetic formula afterwards.
