Colloidal Oat for Skin: What It Is and Why Dermatologists Use It

Tim Clayton

Colloidal oat appears in a lot of eczema and sensitive skin products, and for good reason — it's one of the few ingredients with a genuinely long track record of use in dermatology, not just a skincare marketing trend. Here's what it actually is, and why it earns its place in a skincare formula rather than just sounding "natural."

What Is Colloidal Oat, Exactly?

Colloidal oat is made by grinding oats into an extremely fine powder and processing it so it disperses evenly through water or a formula rather than settling. This "colloidal" form is what allows the beneficial compounds in oats to stay evenly distributed through a cream or wash, rather than sinking to the bottom.

It's not the same as simply crushing oats — the processing matters, which is why formula quality varies significantly between products that list "oat" as an ingredient.

Why It Helps Sensitive and Eczema-Prone Skin

It calms irritation

Oat contains compounds called avenanthramides, which have a soothing effect on irritated skin. This is one of the better-studied benefits of oat in skincare, and it's why colloidal oat is a common recommendation for itchy, inflamed skin conditions including eczema.

It supports the skin barrier

Oat contains natural fats and beta-glucans that help the skin retain moisture, supporting the same barrier function that's compromised in eczema-prone skin.

It's gentle enough for the most sensitive skin

Colloidal oat is well tolerated even on very reactive skin, which is why it's a common recommendation for babies and young children as well as adults.

How It's Typically Used

You'll most often find colloidal oat in two types of products:

  • Washes and cleansers — as a soap-free way to cleanse without stripping the skin
  • Moisturisers — to soothe while also supporting barrier repair

Is It Safe for Babies?

Yes — colloidal oat has a long history of use in infant skincare and is generally very well tolerated, including on eczema-prone skin from birth. As with any ingredient, a small patch test is sensible if you're trying a new product for the first time, particularly if your baby has known allergies.

About Ovée

Colloidal oat is a key ingredient in both the Ovée Baby & Child Gentle Oat Wash and the Ovée Dermatologist Lipid Cream, chosen specifically for its soothing, barrier-supporting properties on sensitive and eczema-prone skin. It's combined with other natural lipids like sunflower oil and shea butter to give the skin comprehensive support, not just short-term comfort.
